Simmons Applauds House Republican Budget Proposal
5/11/2011

Rep. Justin Simmons (R-Lehigh/Northampton) issued the following statement today regarding the budget proposal introduced by House Republicans on Tuesday:

“The House Republican budget proposal calls for responsible spending and right-sizing of our government. This proposal, which maintains the final spend number of $27.3 billion found in Governor Tom Corbett’s proposal, restores a significant amount of funding to education providing $380 million in additional funding for higher education, including $195 million to the 14 state-owned universities that make up the State System of Higher Education, and more than $200 million to basic education, with $100 million for the restoration of accountability block grants.

“Several reports show that Pennsylvania’s public welfare system is simply broken. There is fraud, abuse, and no accountability. The House Republican budget proposal fixes these problems while ensuring those who are truly in need can get assistance.

“Recent reports show our Commonwealth experiencing a surplus of approximately $500 million. Some people have suggesting using this surplus to help fund our upcoming budget. While I am happy we are enjoying a surplus, I caution the approach of using this money right away as we may need it to fund the Medical Care Availability and Reduction of Error (Mcare) Fund, which was raided by the previous administration. An act which could be overturned through the courts.

“The days of Pennsylvania government taxing, borrowing, and overspending to produce a budget have come to an end with the House Republican budget proposal. Our hard-working taxpayers deserve nothing less and I am proud to support this proposal.”
