Budget Hearings Begin Next Week

Members of the House Appropriations Committee will begin their detailed look into the governor’s $33 billion budget proposal as hearings begin on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

The opening day of hearings will include testimony from the Independent Fiscal Office and the Department of Revenue, while Wednesday will focus on the themes of job creation and ensuring stability of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. The remainder of the week will include looks into the proposed budgets of the departments of Transportation and Conservation and Natural Resources.

The full schedule is available here, and you can watch the hearings live at
Strengthening Megan’s Law

Legislation is on its way to the governor for his signature that would strengthen Megan’s Law to protect families from dangerous sex offenders, namely those who are released back into the community without supervision to monitor their transition.

House Bill 631 would require the court to impose a mandatory three-year probation period consecutive to any term of total confinement for a person convicted of a Tier III sex offense. Current law permits the court to modify or even terminate probation supervision.

This bill would also ensure sexual offenders remain registered. Without the new law, up to 17,000 sexual offenders in Pennsylvania could be removed from the Megan’s Law registry.
Federal Funding Awarded for Spotted Lanternfly Program

Good news from the U.S. Department of Agriculture! The agency is investing $17.5 million in the fight against spotted lanternfly in Pennsylvania.

Quarantines have been established in our area in an attempt to stop the spread of this non-native species, which poses a significant threat to the grape, apple, stone fruit and hardwood industries.

Learn more here.

I will be hosting a public meeting on Thursday, April 5, at 6:30 p.m. to provide information to area residents about this invasive species and the efforts to halt its spread. The meeting will take place at the Upper Perkiomen High School Auditorium, 2 Walt Road in Pennsburg. Our presenters will be experts from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and Penn State Extension.

It was a pleasure to take part in Monday’s grand opening celebration for Wings of Change Counseling, which has relocated to 222 Main Street in Emmaus. I presented a certificate of achievement from the House of Representatives to Dr. Carol Corbett and her staff, congratulating them on their beautiful new office!
