Simmons Announces $710,000 in State Funding for Area Improvement Projects
9/18/2018
HARRISBURG – Rep. Justin Simmons (R-Lehigh/Montgomery/Northampton) announced that five improvement projects in the 131st Legislative District will benefit from nearly $710,000 in state funding approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) in Harrisburg today.

Projects receiving funding through the Pennsylvania Small Water and Sewer Program include:

• Emmaus, which was awarded a $158,791 grant for sewer meter station repair and manhole replacement. The meters are located in the business district as well as the northern and northeastern neighborhoods. All of the manholes in these areas are in disrepair or in serious need of an upgrade. The total project cost is $367,600.
• Coopersburg, which was awarded a $150,000 grant to renovate its water reservoir facility. The project includes replacing the roof and liner. The upgrade will lower the contamination risk and reduce the amount of wasted water through leakage loss. The total project cost is $208,998.
• The Lower Saucon Authority, which was awarded a $100,000 grant for a water pressure control and monitoring project. Portions of the authority’s system are located in low-elevation areas resulting in high operation pressure that has caused pipe breaks. The total project cost is $324,200.
• Lower Saucon Township, which was awarded a $50,679 grant to replace a waterline. The work involves the replacement of 1,200 feet of aging waterline that runs between the public works building through Town Hall Park to the restroom building. The total project cost is $59,623.

“The Borough of Emmaus has worked extremely hard to complete its project and I am pleased the funding was approved,” said Simmons. “The state grant will greatly assist them in reducing stormwater inflow into the sewer lines.”

In addition, Coopersburg was awarded $250,000 through the Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program for the completion of the southern end of the Coopersburg Saucon Rail Trail. The half-mile trail extension will create a safe access at East Station Avenue for pedestrian, bicycle and vehicular traffic. It will also provide a link to allow Springfield Township to extend the trail into Bucks County. The total project cost is $357,212.

The Pennsylvania Small Water and Sewer Program offers grants for small water and sewer infrastructure projects and can be used to assist with the construction, improvement, expansion, or rehabilitation or repair of a water supply or sanitary sewer system.

The Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program offers grants for planning, acquisition, development, rehabilitation and repair of greenways, recreational trails, open space, parks and beautification projects. It is supported by the Marcellus Legacy Fund established by Act 13 of 2012.
