State Grant Awarded for Creek Stabilization Project in Lehigh County, Says Simmons
HARRISBURG – State funding in the amount of $78,659 today was awarded to the Lehigh County Conservation District to implement the Leibert Creek Stabilization and Enhancement Project in Emmaus, according to Rep. Justin Simmons (R-Lehigh/Montgomery/Northampton).

“This Growing Greener grant will go toward stabilizing nearly 1,000 feet of the streambank in order to decrease erosion along a creek that flows into the primary water supply for the city of Allentown,” said Simmons. “In addition, 25 habitat structures will be built to improve aquatic life.”

The project is a combined effort between the conservation district, Wildlands Conservancy and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Once completed, the project will allow for educational opportunities along the creek for the public.

“This is an opportunity to improve a creek that contributes to a major city’s water supply,” said Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Patrick McDonnell. “The benefits of this grant will help with water for consumption and recreational use.”

The Growing Greener grant program is supported by the Environmental Stewardship Fund, which receives its funding from landfill tipping fees. Growing Greener projects have been instrumental in cleaning up abandoned mine lands, preserving farmland, and protecting and restoring watersheds throughout the Commonwealth.
