State House Passes Simmons’ Resolution Urging Congress to Investigate NSA Surveillance Program
HARRISBURG – A resolution sponsored by Rep. Justin Simmons (R-Lehigh/Northampton) that urges the U.S. Congress to create a special committee to investigate and report on the National Security Agency’s (NSA) surveillance program was approved by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives today. House Resolution 456 also calls for the committee to recommend any necessary reforms to the Patriot Act or the conduct of the NSA, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and any other agencies involved in this program.

“According to recent revelations, the NSA is collecting information regarding telephone and Internet communications,” said Simmons. “This is shocking to me and to most Americans. While we understand the importance of the war on terror, many questions have been raised regarding the scope of the data being gathered.”

The NSA has been acquiring “telephony metadata,” or transactional information, relating to calls made or received by customers of Verizon Business Network Services and other phone companies. Under provisions of the Patriot Act, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) issued orders directing these phone companies to provide to the NSA telephony metadata relating to customer calls, including phone calls that are made wholly within the United States.

Simmons noted that a broad spectrum of organizations, including Americans for Limited Government, the Tenth Amendment Center, the American Library Association, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Competitive Enterprise Institute have expressed concern regarding these revelations and have asked Congress to investigate the NSA surveillance program and report to the American people.

Copies of Simmons’ resolution are to be transmitted to the presiding officers of each house of Congress and to each congressional member from Pennsylvania.
