On May 31, Rep. Justin Simmons toured the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of the Lehigh Valley, which is located in Bethlehem. Rep. Justin Simmons was a guest speaker during the 2013 Memorial Day ceremonies at the Coopersburg VFW. About 300 people attended the annual event. On April 24, Rep. Justin Simmons recognized members of the Salisbury High School Boys Swimming and Diving Team on the floor of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for winning the PIAA Class 2A Championship in March. Justin Simmons visited the Lehigh Valley Children’s Center in Allentown during the organization’s “Week of the Child” celebration. On April 16, Rep. Justin Simmons visited with members of the Prime Time Senior Citizen Group of Calvary Bible Fellowship Church in Coopersburg during their tour of the state Capitol. On April 4, Rep. Justin Simmons hosted a seminar in Coopersburg on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A panel of experts provided information on PTSD and took questions from the audience. Among the speakers were the parents of two soldiers who suffered from the disorder. A group of fourth-graders from Harry S. Justin Simmons presented a citation from the House of Representatives to Mary and Robert Kufrovich of Center Valley in recognition of the couple’s 60th wedding anniversary. In December, Rep. Justin Simmons talked with students from the Lehigh Christian Academy in Allentown during their visit to the state Capitol. On Jan. 29, Rep. Justin Simmons presented Anna Rogers of Salisbury Township with a citation from the House of Representatives in honor of her 103rd birthday. Rep. Simmons had the pleasure of spending time with Brycen Holland of Limeport. Brycen, who is a sophomore at Southern Lehigh High School, shadowed Simmons for the day at the state Capitol. Rep. Simmons visited with students and teachers from the United Friends School in Quakertown during their recent field trip to the state Capitol. Rep. Simmons hosted a Student Financial Aid Seminar on Oct. 4 at the Southern Lehigh Public Library. Bob Mensch in presenting state citations to Noga Nir-Kistler of Salisbury Township in recognition of her outstanding accomplishments during the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. She won a bronze medal in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke event and placed sixth in the women's 50-meter freestyle event. Rep. Simmons spoke to a class of future teachers at Penn State Lehigh Valley. They asked a variety of questions, ranging from how a bill becomes law to how he got involved in politics. Rep. Simmons joined Sen. Bob Mensch (right) in delivering state citations to Elizabeth "Ebee" Price of Coopersburg recognizing her recent accomplishment of being named as an alternate on the U.S. Women's Gymnastics Team that competed in the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Ebee also finished 4th overall at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Rep. Simmons co-hosted a public hearing in Allentown, conducted by the House Majority Policy Committee, that focused on job creation and what state government should do to improve Pennsylvania's business climate. Rep. Simmons hosted a Right-to-Know seminar at the Southern Lehigh Public Library. Nathanael Byerly, deputy director of the state Office of Open Records, explained how citizens can use Pennsylvania’s Right-to-Know law to obtain copies of public records from state agencies and local governments. Rep. Simmons welcomed Jackson Fu of Macungie and his parents to the House floor where Jackson was recognized for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. He is a member of Troop 439 Allentown. Simmons testified before the House Judiciary Committee on his Caylee's Law legislation, which would increase the penalties for concealing the death of a child. House Bill 1842 was passed unanimously by committee members and sent to the House floor for consideration. Rep. Simmons held a news conference at the State Capitol to outline his legislation to strengthen Pennsylvania's laws protecting children. House Bill 1842 would change the crime of concealing the death of a child to a third-degree felony. The Caylee Anthony case in Florida underlined the need for the measure. Rep. Simmons was a panelist at a recent health care summit sponsored by the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce. He discussed health care reform issues on the state and federal levels. On Nov. 1, Rep. Simmons welcomed Andrew Sheats to the floor of the House. Andrew is a 10th grade student at Southern Lehigh High School and was shadowing Rep. Simmons for the day. On Oct. 13, Rep. Simmons spoke to students at Southern Lehigh Intermediate School about his job as a state representatives and how state government works. On Sept. 23, Rep. Simmons presented a citation to the Emmaus High School Fitness team for winning the 2011 U.S. Marines Youth Foundation Fitness Championship earlier this year. He was joined by Rep. Doug Reichley (R-Berks/Lehigh). On Aug. 17, Rep. Simmons toured the Center for Advanced Technology for Large Structural Systems at Lehigh University, which focuses on cutting edge research for civil and marine construction projects. Simmons hosted a public forum in Center Valley on Pennsylvania's growing Marcellus Shale gas drilling industry. A panel of experts spent two hours answering questions from the audience. Rep.
